LCA: A Tool to Understand Environmental Impact

Life cycle assessment (LCA) has emerged as an essential tool for understanding the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifespan. NatureWorks LLC is hosting a free, one-hour web seminar to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of life cycle methodologies, explain how to use a lifecycle study, and describe how companies such as The Coca-Cola Company incorporate life cycle information in its material decision-making processes.

On this webcast you'll hear a panel of sustainability experts including: Dr. Ramani Narayan, Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science from Michigan State University, Erwin Vink, Environmental Affairs Manager for NatureWorks LLC and Scott Vitters, Director of Sustainable Packaging, for The Coca-Cola Company. This panel will discuss life cycle methodologies, and explain how to use lifecycle data in your own sustainability efforts.

The End of Life Vision

NatureWorks LLC has just published our End of Life Vision for NatureWorks® biopolymer on our website. This vision links to additional reference material created by NatureWorks on topics such as composting, landfill and recycling. The end-of-life vision for NatureWorks® biopolymer in the long term is to maintain a journey to zero waste – keeping the polymer, regardless of form, out of the landfill and being able to recycle into the same use or higher valued use if possible. For additional information on our vision, our journey today and the roadmap ahead of us, read on...

Industrial Biotechnology Journal Publishes NatureWorks' New Eco-Profile

The latest eco-profile of NatureWorks LLC's plant-to-pellet polymer process shows 85 percent fewer actual carbon dioxide emissions and 50 percent less actual fossil fuel use in 2006, compared to a similar analysis based on mathematical calculations from three years earlier. The peer-reviewed research data which appeared in the March 2007 Industrial Biotechnology journal, promises a further shrinking of the company's environmental footprint in the future. Read more.

Ask the Expert

Glenn JohnstonComposting is a method of waste disposal that allows organic materials to be recycled into a product that can be used as a valuable soil amendment. With the increase in organics collection in certain regions of the United States, and other economic changes happening in the waste collection industry in the past three to five years, NatureWorks LLC has recently worked with Integrated Waste Management Consulting, LLC, an outside consulting firm, to update our United States composting map. There were a number of changes including the addition of sites in the Northeast and California. We hope this information is useful to you and helps increase the rate of landfill diversion by taking valuable bio-waste like food, paper, organics and closing the loop through nature's carbon cycle.

What a Month!

Inspired by Earth Day (April 22), this year's Ingeo NatureWorks Earth Month event ran through June 5th, World Environmental Day. Ingeo NatureWorks Earth Month is a series of global events focused on responsible innovation. This year, which marks the third annual event for NatureWorks LLC, Ingeo NatureWorks Earth Month showcased a wide range of partners in plastics & packaging applications in addition to the existing fibers applications (apparel, home textiles, and more). With the participation of 51 brands, and more than 7000 retail locations in 12 countries, NatureWorks LLC would like to thank all of our partners who participated in Ingeo NatureWorks Earth Month 2007 and made it such a smashing success!
