Positive Consumer Response Prompts Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A. to Offer NatureWorks PLA Packaging Line to Retailers Coast-to-Coast
ATLANTA, November 6, 2005 -- Following its successful launch of NatureWorks® PLA packaging for its fresh-cut fruit, Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. is significantly expanding its use of nature-based packaging. The company's decision was prompted by positive response to the packaging from retailers and consumers, as well as the packaging's solid technical performance.
Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A. began offering NatureWorks PLA packaging for its freshly-cut produce line, including Del Monte Gold™ extra sweet pineapple, melons, fruit and vegetable medleys, in 2004. Wild Oats Market was the first retailer to house 100 percent of its Del Monte freshly cut produce in NatureWorks PLA packaging.
"We are very pleased with initial consumer feedback and look forward to continue to offer Del Monte™ products in environmentally friendly packaging." said Juan Carlos Sague, Sr. Packaging Manager, Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. "This was one of the main reasons behind our decision to extend our line of products in NatureWorks PLA packaging to the entire retail market."
Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc. will gradually incorporate NatureWorks PLA packaging into its full line of products. In 2006, approximately half of all containers for Del Monte™ freshly cut produce will be made from NatureWorks PLA. Del Monte Fresh Produce will provide retailers with the option of selling its fresh-cut produce in NatureWorks PLA containers or petroleum-based plastic containers.
"Since we announced plans to offer retailers the option to carry our fresh-cut produce in NatureWorks PLA packaging, the response has been fantastic," continued Sague. "We expect that in 2006, approximately half of our customers will choose to offer consumers Del Monte™ fresh-cut produce in NatureWorks PLA."
Sabert, a leading supplier of food packaging, is producing the NatureWorks PLA containers for Del Monte's line of fresh-cut produce.
"At Sabert, we pride ourselves on versatility in our product lines and material selections," said Craig Muldrew, vice president of marketing, Sabert. "The shape of our design, combined with the performance and natural appeal of NatureWorks PLA, is an attractive selling point."
In the future, Sabert plans to incorporate NatureWorks PLA into its other packaging lines as part of the company's commitment to offering the most innovative options for its customers.
"Industry awareness of NatureWorks PLA packaging is gaining momentum in the marketplace," continued Muldrew. "By offering our customers the option to use nature-based packaging, we're maintaining our reputation for quality and versatility."
