September 26, 2005 - A More Responsible Retail Trend

UV Color Announces Gift, Transaction Cards and Packaging made from NatureWorks® PLA

LAS VEGAS - September 26, 2005 - Consumer marketers will enter the 2006 retail season with a new, more responsible alternative to traditional plastic packaging, specialty and transaction cards made from petroleum-based plastics such as PVC. UV Color, Inc.(UVC) is working on the development of a line of transaction cards, phone cards, and retail packaging under the brand earthsource, made from a 100 percent renewable resource, corn-based NatureWorks® PLA.

"As the use of plastic cards and packaging continues to increase, retailers and brand owners continue to seek alternatives to traditional plastics and be more responsible with these choices," said Jim Keister, Marketing Manager, UV Color, Inc.

Earthsource specialty and transaction cards are produced using a sheet of plastic made from NatureWorks PLA. The sheets can then be put through additional processes, depending on the item being manufactured, cut to size, packaged and shipped. The end result is a product that looks and feels like traditional plastic with a better, more responsible environmental profile.

UVC intends to expand the market for earthsource products far beyond the retail industry. Phone cards, transaction cards and specialty packaging from NatureWorks PLA will also be available from the company in the near future. "NatureWorks PLA is a terrific resource for the printed plastic industry," continued Keister. "It's a viable product that will positively impact the market for specialty and transaction cards, and product packaging as well as those companies that are environmentally and socially responsible."

The earthsource material, made from NatureWorks PLA, is derived from annually renewable resources like corn, and yet provides convenience and performance while offering customers the added appeal of a plastic made from nature.

About NatureWorks PLA
The technology to produce NatureWorks PLA essentially harvests the starch stored in natural plant sugars. The sugar is then fermented into lactic acid, which is used to create a clear plastic called polylactide (PLA) that can be shaped into a variety of specialty cards, bottles, containers, trays, film and other products. Today, NatureWorks PLA is the first and only green-house-gas-neutral polymer. The net affect of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions is that NatureWorks has decreased its impact on fossil fuel consumption by up to 68 percent.
