Ingeo Innovations Showcase Better Lifestyle Choices at Eco-Products 2008

NatureWorks LLC presents new Ingeo™ low impact products to meet the carbon reduction challenge theme at Eco-Products 2008 in Tokyo, Japan.

TOKYO, December 10, 2008 – NatureWorks LLC (booth no. P-1, Bioplastics Pavilion, East Hall 5) is pleased to be present and support its Ingeo partners’ products at the 10th edition of the groundbreaking Eco-Products 2008 event held at the Tokyo Big Sight International Exhibition Center from December 11 to 13. The aim of the exhibition is to accelerate the expansion of eco-sustainable green markets by highlighting the growth of commercialized environmentally friendly products and services. The three-day event is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the world today and draws more than 170,000 visitors with a roster of more than 750 exhibiting companies.

The theme for this year’s exhibition is "We Can Do it! Eco-lifestyle with a 50% CO2 Reduction". And, recognizing this challenge, Eco-Products 2008 has created a platform to showcase the latest technologies, innovations and products that can be potential solutions to accomplish this goal.

Ingeo products will be showcased within the NatureWorks booth in a Creative Gallery with a wide range of eco-sensible partner products. Also, the Carbon Offset Booth, a key exhibit within the exhibition supported with the collaboration of the Japanese environmental magazine "Sotokoto", showcases Ingeo as part of the array of product and service innovations designed to help reduce the carbon footprint of retailers, restaurants and cafés. Ingeo hot drink cups will be used at the booth to represent a better foodservice option with its superior environmental attributes. Using Ingeo for the extrusion coating on all these cups means a real carbon reduction can be measured because in manufacture, Ingeo uses 65% less fossil fuel and emits 80-90% less greenhouse gases than traditional petroleum-based plastics. Ingeo represents an ingenious new material that is made from plants, not oil with the added benefit that it is derived entirely from annually renewable plant resources.

From food packaging solutions of every kind from serviceware to flexible films, plastic cards, electrical appliance casings and auto parts, Ingeo bioplastic has redefined an industry that used to rely on oil as its resource material, and a complete assortment of Ingeo fiber applications for apparel, homeware and nonwovens demonstrates that Ingeo has become an innovation lifestyle brand for industry and consumers alike in just a few years since its launch in 2003. Commercial proof of that comes from recognizing there are more than 100 global Ingeo brand partners producing a full range of lifestyle innovations in over 20 different applications and selling today in 70,000 retail doors worldwide.

The Ingeo Creative Gallery at the NatureWorks booth showcases the latest range of Ingeo innovative eco-lifestyle products from all around the world

Co-exhibiting partners include;

  • Risupack (Japan), with an array of fresh food packaging solutions
  • BP Consulting (Japan), with their Ingeo extrusion coated hot drink cups and Ingeo natural plastic high-heat lids
  • Winfa Packaging (HK) will show a range of cold drink cups and containers
  • Chien Fa (Taiwan) also presenting cold drink cups and food packaging concepts
  • Stream Source (China) will have a range of heat resistant Ingeo flatware and serviceware

Also at Eco-Products 2008 you will be able to see a wider variety of Ingeo biopolymer applications at exhibiting partner booths within the exhibition.

Many of these Ingeo innovations will benefit from improved manufacturing efficiencies coming from the introduction of a new Ingeo resin grade available from NatureWorks today. This new quality, Ingeo 3251D is designed to improve injection molded product performances for semi durable consumer electronics applications, including:

  • Products will match heat requirements up to 55 degrees
  • The resin is suitable for clear and opaque applications
  • It can replace incumbent styrenics (GPPS, HIPS, SAN, ABS)
  • Products will have impact resistance similar to mid impact HIPS

This new Ingeo resin grade will give an increased productivity with shorter molding cycles, and reduce entry costs, allowing the same mold and screw use as for styrenics (GPPS, SAN, HIPS and ABS). Molders will see the potential for down gauging in some applications (e.g. GPPS, SAN) to compensate for higher density.

This progress underscores NatureWorks’ commitment to continual innovation in the field of biopolymer production and acknowledges the new dynamic business direction for making contemporary goods with a natural origin and delivering high performance without compromise in new eco-lifestyle products that have a powerful and compelling environmental message for the consumer today where Ingeo can be a part of their journey towards a smaller carbon footprint.

NatureWorks, Ingeo and Eco-Products 2008; together making responsible innovation with performance a better choice today for all. Better for the planet and so better for consumers and business too.

About NatureWorks

NatureWorks LLC is a company dedicated to meeting the world’s needs today without compromising the earth’s ability to meet the needs of tomorrow. NatureWorks LLC is the first company to offer a family of commercially available low carbon footprint biopolymers derived from 100 percent annually renewable resources with performance and economics that compete with oil-based plastics and fibers. The production of these biopolymers uses less fossil fuel and emits fewer green-house gases than conventional polymers. The company applies its proprietary technology to process natural plant sugars to make Ingeo™ biopolymer, which is then used uniquely to make and market finished products also under the Ingeo brand name. NatureWorks LLC is a joint venture between Cargill and Teijin Limited of Japan. For more information, visit
