Coffee and Ingeo innovations join together at the Specialty Coffee Association of America annual conference

NatureWorks partners work hand in hand to deliver a more responsible coffee experience to their customers May 2-5, 2008, in Minneapolis, USA.

MINNETONKA, Minn., May 2, 2008 – At this year’s Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) meeting in Minneapolis, MN, NatureWorks LLC is pleased to support three of its key partners with their Ingeo™-based innovation products. Being held this year at the Minneapolis Convention Center May 2nd through 5th, 2008, products featured from NatureWorks partners include hot and cold cups from International Paper and Fabri-Kal respectively, and new Ingeo layered film coffee bags from Fres-co System USA Inc.– all innovations that provide a new level of freshness, convenience and responsibility for leading coffee retailers.

Sustainability is a keynote theme of the conference including topics such as fair trade procurement and sustainable growing practices as well as information on the highest taste standards achieved through barista expertise and product quality. Also, for the first time in 20 years, the SCAA conference is announcing it will be completely carbon neutral, being held within a venue recognized for operating one of the most environmentally friendly venues on the conference circuit.

All of this chimes perfectly with Ingeo, an ingenious new natural plastic material that’s made from plants instead of oil. It is currently being used for a variety of coffee dedicated applications such as coated paper cups, cold drink plastic cups and film packaging which until recently used LDPE or PET which are both made from finite fossil fuel resources.

Ingeo drink cups and coffee packaging bags represent a step in the right direction, reflecting a persistent and growing consumer demand for better and more environmentally responsible choices making all the NatureWorks partner developments in thermoforming, film laminates and coatings a more complete sustainability story for the coffee industry.

“It’s clear that consumers now want to choose not only more sustainable coffee but the whole lifestyle package associated with it. Today an entire family of better Ingeo innovations is available to the coffee industry and are being delivered by our partners to satisfy this need,” said Koen Bastiaens, Market and Business Development Manager for NatureWorks LLC.

International Paper and their ecotainer paper hot cup are currently being used at locations such as Tully’s and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. Unlike traditional foodservice packaging, ecotainer is derived from renewable resources, and provides an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional foodservice packaging. For more information on how the ecotainer cup is improving our environment one cup at a time, visit or International Paper, booth #1426.

Fabri-Kal is supplying their Greenware brand drink cups and lids to fine coffee providers such as Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Scooter’s Coffee House and Stone Creek Coffee Roasters. The fast growing market of cold coffee and tea-based beverages may now be supported with a responsible take-out cup made entirely from Ingeo biopolymer.

“Our company has made a commitment to work in such a way that promotes sustainability in the environment. Greenware made with Ingeo has been a perfect fit,” proclaimed Steve Hawthorne, executive manager of sales and marketing at Stone Creek Coffee Roasters. “Both our customers and staff appreciate this initiative and have been excited to learn about this unique product.”

Greenware cups are available in seven sizes with flat and dome lids to match and may be custom branded in up to 5 colors. Stock design imprinted cups with green rolling hills and a statement about the product’s origin and compostability are also available and have given operators the chance to differentiate their businesses and proclaim their sustainability initiatives without normal print minimums. For more information on Greenware products, please visit or stop by their SCAA booth #711. Stone Creek Coffee Roasters will also be exhibiting at SCAA at booth #1825.

Fres-co System USA Inc. and their multilayer bag that incorporates Ingeo film application in food packaging, uses BI-AX Inc.'s EVLON film. Fres-co has developed a proprietary multi-layer film structure that uses Ingeo as one of the layers effectively replacing the 48ga. PET film layer with an 80 ga. Ingeo layer. This thicker Ingeo layer allows for a reduction in the LLDPE film layer. This new Ingeo laminate is used on the 10oz and 12oz bags of Newman’s Own Organic Coffee, Jim’s Organic Coffee, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. Fres-co System USA, Inc. will be exhibiting at SCAA at booth #1805.

Production of the biopolymer used to make Ingeo products uses 65 percent less fossil fuels and produces 80-90 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than the manufacturing of conventional plastic wrap. It is a tangible catalyst for the development of lower carbon footprint products across a wide range of goods. This is evidenced by the proven track record of Ingeo, now found in more than 20 applications from at least 100 of NatureWorks current commercial partners selling in more than 70,000 retail outlets worldwide. These Ingeo innovations range from rigid deli packaging to bottles for juice, milk and still waters, gift and loyalty cards, food serviceware, foam trays, casings for candies, cosmetics and electronics, as well as some clever fiber and textile developments for home, garden, personal care, and a complete apparel wardrobe which now includes the uniform and retail markets

All this confirms that there is a new dynamic business development for the specialty coffee industry in packaging, food serviceware, and consumer products, that comes from all of the many and varied Ingeo innovations around today and it brings a new and straightforward meaning of how to do business differently. Making contemporary goods with a natural origin, bringing performance without compromise and making products that have a powerful environmental message to a consumer looking for better choices more satisfying choices..
