With Ingeo Innovations, the Era of Biopolymer Lifestyles is the New Reality Today

PARIS, July 1, 2008 – Conventional plastics can no longer be the sole option in a world where inconsiderate consumption is increasing the pressure on natural resources and more responsible recovery options. Today, with Ingeo innovations we can see the reality and prospect of a whole new solution in the form of biopolymers that are made from plants, not oil. Developing new applications with Ingeo™ relieves the pressure and unsustainable dependency on our limited and costly fossil fuel resources and offers eco-aware consumers a real option to make a difference and help protect the environment for future generations.

Ingeo biopolymer is made by NatureWorks LLC, a company based in the USA whose mission is to meet the world’s needs today without compromising the earth’s ability to meet the needs of tomorrow.

As part of Ingeo Earth Month, inaugurated in New York and closing in Tokyo in June, a second roundtable was held in Paris to discuss the opportunities from plant-based resources under the heading of “Mass Consumption and Responsible Innovation.” The range of experiences marshaled, and the exchange of views obtained, showed very plainly that it is possible, even now, to limit environmental impact by manufacturing and using an alternative to conventional plastics.

The presentation of Ingeo bio-materials by leading experts was held in Paris on May 21st. It served to demonstrate the technological feasibility of a wide range of lifestyle products with unique performance properties.

Today, the Ingeo biopolymer production process created by NatureWorks LLC in 1997 is the origin of a new generation of products that are better for the environment. For consumers who are eco-motivated, these products resonate in a unique and valuable way. For all our trading partners, they provide real point-of-difference with product lines they can market using natural plastics instead of oil-based plastics, so enhancing their own brand values with a more caring approach to the environment. At the same time, the breadth of application of Ingeo is expanding to include many more everyday lifestyle products and is the conduit for a complete assortment of applications from packaging to durables, electronic appliances to cosmetic casings, transaction cards and more, as well as a whole range of fiber-based products for apparel, the home, personal care and hygiene products.

The Paris event evidenced social responsibility, ethical conduct and fairness at work, shown by avant-garde fashion designers at Marité+François Girbaud, who selected Ingeo fibers for their first eco-inspired designs. The collection goes on sale in their brand boutiques in France this September.

Evidence, too, of the new commercial feasibility of Ingeo, can be seen in names such as Elisa Jimenez, from Project Runway (USA), Gattinoni (Italy), DDC LAB (USA), Naturevsfuture (USA), Parsons School of Design (USA), and Monecouture by Daniela Barba (Italy). These are some of the businesses that have selected Ingeo to reinforce more innovation and creativity.

Environmentally, the production of Ingeo produces 68% less fossil energy, and emits 80-90% less greenhouse gases than traditional plastics. It also offers the opportunity for more disposal options than conventional plastics. For more information on End-of- Life options visit www.natureworksllc.com.

About NatureWorks

NatureWorks LLC is a company dedicated to meeting the world’s needs today without compromising the earth’s ability to meet the needs of tomorrow. NatureWorks LLC is the first company to offer a family of commercially available low-carbon footprint biopolymers derived from 100 percent annually renewable resources with performance and economics that compete with oil-based plastics and fibers. The production of these biopolymers uses less fossil fuel and emits fewer green-house gases than conventional polymers. The company applies its proprietary technology to process natural plant sugars to make NatureWorks® biopolymer, which is then used uniquely to make and market finished products under the Ingeo brand name. NatureWorks LLC is a joint venture between Cargill in the US and Teijin Limited of Japan. For more information, visit www.natureworksllc.com.
