Climate Change Conference Organizers Order 285,000 BioWare Drinking Cups - Made of Ingeo Plastic From Plants, Not Oil

Global food service company Huhtamaki supplies innovative plastic cups and deli containers that help lower the UN Conference’s carbon footprint

COPENHAGEN, Denmark., December 10, 2009 – At the Bella Center where the United Nations global conference on climate change taking place now through December 18, the 15,000 delegates are being served cold beverages in Huhtamaki BioWare® cups, which are made from NatureWorks Ingeo™ bioplastic - a plastic made from plants, not oil.

Huhtamaki, headquartered in Espoo, Finland, estimates that use of the 285,000 BioWare cups and 12,000 deli containers compared to petroleum-based products saves an equivalent in greenhouse gas reduction to eliminating driving 19,803 kilometers (12,305 miles) in an average European automobile. “There will not be one large step the world takes as it addresses lowering greenhouse gas emissions, but millions of small changes that gain momentum for positive improvement,” said Aino Hästö, Sales and Marketing Manager from Huhtamaki. “The significance of BioWare at the UN Conference on Climate Change is that this global spotlight will spur interest, create demand, and develop the awareness that renewably sourced plastics such as Ingeo have a part to play in lowering greenhouse gas emissions.”

“We strongly agree with Huhtamaki’s position on the importance of the UN conference for bringing awareness and creating interest in new materials and products made from renewable resources,” said Marc Verbruggen, president and CEO of NatureWorks. “The world is truly on the cusp of significant changes in the way we utilize renewable resources and cut back on greenhouse gas emissions.”

Huhtamaki also supplied the conference center with other items in its BioWare range: bio-coated paper cups for hot drinks, Chinet® plates as well as cup carriers. All BioWare products are certified in accordance with EN13432, the European norm for compostability of packaging, and all have a lower environmental impact than their traditional counterparts.
