High performance, naturally advanced materials from NatureWorks are driving material change in new applications showcased at Chinaplas 2018

MINNETONKA, Minn., April 24, 2018 —
From coffee capsules to food serviceware and appliances to 3D printing, NatureWorks has been leading applications innovation for biomaterials since 1989. Recently, NatureWorks reached the milestone of two billion pounds of Ingeo biopolymer sold globally via its comprehensive portfolio of 33 grades, which are converted into thousands of consumer and industrial products.

At Chinaplas 2018 and along with its customers and supply chain partners, NatureWorks will showcase new, innovative Ingeo-based applications across a spectrum of industries. These applications demonstrate how Ingeo can be tailored to enhance performance attributes critical to application performance from barrier, to heat and impact resistance, to thermoformability, all while embracing the concepts of a low-carbon circular economy.

A new generation of coffee capsules show how this packaging can be designed to enhance beverage taste and aroma while offering compostability that enables organics recycling of the used coffee grounds. NatureWorks’ Ingeo 3D printing grades 3D850 and 3D870 take quality filament to a new, higher level of performance, increasing heat and impact resistance while extending into new industrial applications from foundry to medical device prototyping.

A first-of-its-kind refrigerator liner will be on display showing how Ingeo’s barrier properties can be leveraged to increase the energy efficiency of refrigerators by 7-15% annually over the life of the appliance. Bioplastic food serviceware including cups and utensils with higher strength and heat resistance are contributing to reduced levels of organic waste going to landfills by diverting to industrial composting and creating significant benefits to cities and venues implementing zero waste initiatives.

Taking advantage of the inherent properties of transparency and stiffness, Ingeo cups for form-fill-seal in dairy and dessert applications are creating material savings through packaging light-weighting and removing the need for expensive clarifying additives.

Specific to the market in China, NatureWorks will also be displaying examples of tape and peanuts made from Ingeo for e-commerce packaging and carrier bags used for supermarkets. These applications highlight how NatureWorks partners are taking advantage of the versatility of Ingeo to introduce innovative applications that can contribute to a low-carbon economy.

These innovations and more are waiting for Chinaplas attendees at the NatureWorks exhibit in Hall 7.2/Stand J25. Also, be sure to attend the NatureWorks Tech Talk on April 26, 10:50am-11:10am in hall 4.2 / booth T51, where we will go in-depth into the technology behind and opportunity for these new applications.
