NatureWorks to Open New Headquarters and Advanced Biopolymers Research and Development Facility

n response to rapid growth in the market for sustainable biomaterials, NatureWorks has announced our intent to open a new headquarters and advanced biopolymer research facility in Plymouth, MN. Expanded laboratory capabilities will support research into the full circular lifecyle of Ingeo™️ biopolymers from next generation fermentation technology to new applications, to increased functionality.

The expanded R&D capabilities will also support the construction and operation of NatureWorks’s new fully integrated Ingeo PLA manufacturing complex located in Thailand. With an expected opening in 2024, the facility will have an annual capacity of 75,000 tons of Ingeo biopolymer and produce the full portfolio of Ingeo grades.

Sulzer’s PLA Bioplastics Production Technology Selected for NatureWorks’ New plant

On January 13th, Sulzer announced via press release that their PLA bioplastics production technology has been selected for NatureWorks’ new plant, which will be located in Nakhon Sawan Biocomplex, Thailand and will have an annual capacity of 75,000 tons. The new, fully integrated plant will use Sulzer Chemtech’s advanced purification and polymer production technology onsite.

Steve Bray, Vice President of Operations and Project Program Manager at NatureWorks, comments: “Sulzer Chemtech’s specialists have a proven track record delivering highly effective PLA units, and we are looking forward to this cooperation between two market leaders in PLA technology. Leveraging their expertise in process technologies for lactide and PLA products, NatureWorks will design and construct a state-of-the-art production facility that will increase the global availability of functional, high quality Ingeo biopolymers.” Read the press release.



Ingeo in a Biobased Additive Manufacturing Composite for Large Format Printing

On January 28th, NatureWorks Applications Engineer, Deepak Venkatraman, joined the Alliance for Pulp & Paper Technology Innovation (APPTI) webinar on Biobased Materials for Advanced Manufacturing. He shared how Ingeo had a role in the large format additive manufacturing composite developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the UMaine Advanced Structures and Composites Center. Deepak’s section begins at 1:02:45, but all the speakers deliver great content on the project collaboration.

3D Printing

IC3D’s 2021 3D Printed Toys for Tots Campaign

IC3D has successfully organized another annual effort to donate 3D printed toys to kids in need over the holiday season through Toys for Tots. To date, they printed over 61K toys and had over 421 volunteer “Printing Elves” working to produce the toys. Read some “3D Printing Elf Stories” to get an idea of who was behind the work!
