NatureWorks partners with Nonwovens Institute in production of 10 million N95 masks for healthcare workers fighting COVID-19

NATUREWORKS HAS DONATED THE INGEO BIOPOLYMER NEEDED TO PRODUCE AS MANY AS 2 MILLION REUSABLE N95 MASKS PER WEEK FROM A NEW SPUNBOND NONWOVEN STRUCTURE.

As the world faces a critical shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical workers confronting the COVID-19 crisis, a long-standing partnership between  NatureWorks and the Nonwovens Institute (NWI) at North Carolina State University (NC State) has resulted in a new spunbond nonwoven technology enabling the production of at least 10 million additional N95 surgical masks. NWI has converted the use of its research and training pilot production line to produce the face mask materials, and NatureWorks has donated the Ingeo resin needed to produce the spunbond material.

“Donating the Ingeo needed for this application was an easy decision,” said Rich Altice, president and CEO of NatureWorks. “We wanted to support NWI, our long-time partner, as they create devices that will protect the healthcare workers who will take care of us, our families, our colleagues, and our communities in this crisis.” Read full release.

A Circular Economy for 3D Printed Plastics Starts with Material

3D printing

Senior Editor for Additive Manufacturing magazine, Stephanie Hendrixson, wrote a great, in-depth piece about the importance of choosing materials like biopolymers as a step toward more sustainable 3D printing. She discusses how frameworks like Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy can help guide sustainability efforts and showcases how companies like Oak Ridge Labs and Flo have chosen more sustainable options for their large scale projects.

Ultimately, Hendrixson finds a circular economy for plastics involves plastics producers, plastics reclaimers, and the choices made in between. She says carefully considering material choice in the design phase is crucial and we should be on the lookout for new opportunities in the waste stream. Read the article.

International Composting Awareness Week

The 25th anniversary of International Composting Awareness Week is happening May 3 - 9th. In celebration, this year, we at NatureWorks, are reflecting on the value of compost.

Visit NatureWorks' composting page to learn more about how to compost Ingeo biomaterials, our certifications, as well as compost studies that demonstrate how compostable products can effectively deliver food waste back to compost like our recent "Industrial Composting of Ingeo-based Gea Coffee Capsules" which we conducted with Flo and Italian Composting and Biogas Association (CIC).

Be sure to join us on social media as we contribute in building awareness about the benefits of compost use and organics recycling!

America's Greenest Ballpark

In partnerships with Pentair and Eco-Products, Target Field, home to the Minnesota Twins baseball team, is the Greenest Ballpark in America
Our partner, Eco-Products, provides the vast majority of concessions packaging which means packaging at this field has become compostable. Bins for compostable organics disposal are located throughout Target field to help reduce the impact on the environment and send more food waste to compost. Between 2011 - 2019 over 12 tons of waste has been diverted away from local landfills. Read more.

Earth Day and Innovation

In celebration of this year's 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we reflected on innovations that give insight into what a more mindfully sustainable and less wasteful world could look like in the future. One innovation we highlighted this year was the study we published with Oak Ridge Labs about a refrigerator liner made with Ingeo that can reduce energy use 7% to 13% annually over the lifetime of a refrigerator. NATUREWORKS & INDUSTRY NEWS

RECENT EVENTS

AMI Single-Serve Capsules | March 3 - 4 | Austin, TX

NatureWorks both exhibited and spoke at the AMI Single-Serve Capsules event earlier this year. We had Jim Nangeroni, NatureWorks' Director of Applications Development and Business Development Leader, David Stanton, on the ground at the event. David addressed attendees on coffee capsules made with Ingeo and how we can close the loop in capsule sustainability without compromise to the flavor and aroma we all love in that perfect cup of coffee.

SPC Impact | April 1 | Webinar

NatureWorks' Nicole Whiteman joined an SPC Impact panel, "Finding Common Ground in Paper and Plastic". The event was a lively discussion about how achieving “sustainability” is not simply a question of paper or plastic. Correct material choices and appropriate packaging solutions must also be considered.
