From Energy Savings to Zero Waste, High Performance, Naturally Advanced Materials from NatureWorks are Driving Innovation in Applications Showcased at Chinaplas 2019

MINNETONKA, Minn., March 12, 2019 — From coffee capsules to food serviceware and appliances to 3D printing, NatureWorks has been leading applications innovation for biomaterials since 1989. At Chinaplas 2019 and along with its customers and supply chain partners, NatureWorks will showcase new, innovative Ingeo-based applications across a spectrum of industries. These applications demonstrate how Ingeo can be tailored to enhance performance attributes critical to application performance from barrier, to heat and impact resistance, to thermoformability, all while embracing the concepts of a circular bioeconomy.
As part of NatureWorks’ commitment to the circular bioeconomy and decoupling materials from fossil feedstocks, we recently announced that by 2020 100% of the agricultural feedstocks used for Ingeo biopolymer will be certified as environmentally and socially sustainable by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification System to the ISCC PLUS standard of best practices in agricultural production.

Before the Chinaplas main event begins, NatureWorks will be participating in the first Plastics Recycling & Circular Economy Conference on May 20th. Steve Davies, NatureWorks’ VP of Performance Packaging, will be speaking in the Environmental Packaging session on how Ingeo biomaterials contribute to the goals of the circular economy from recycling to diverting food waste to compost.

In the NatureWorks booth, the new Ingeo 3D printing grade 3D450, a new break-away formulation for use in dual extrusion 3D printers, will be on display. Supports printed with Ingeo 3D450 break-away clean and fast resulting in parts with a high quality finish. Ingeo 3D450 is compatible with professional market-focused Ingeo 3D series grades 3D850 and 3D870. Like the other Ingeo 3D grades, at printing speeds up to 100 mm/s, 3D450 prints and cools well without warping.

A new generation of Ingeo-based tea bags and coffee capsules will show how this packaging can be designed to enhance beverage taste and aroma while offering the compostability that enables organics recycling of the used coffee grounds or tea leaves.

A first-of-its-kind refrigerator liner will be on display showing how Ingeo’s barrier properties can be leveraged to increase the energy efficiency of refrigerators by 7-15% annually over the life of the appliance. These measurable energy savings are the result of peer-reviewed research conducted by NatureWorks and the United States Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory Peer wass detailed in the February 2019 issue of Applied Energy journal.

Specific to the market in China, NatureWorks will also be displaying examples of tape and peanuts made from Ingeo for e-commerce packaging and carrier bags used for supermarkets. These applications highlight how NatureWorks partners are taking advantage of the versatility of Ingeo to introduce innovative applications that can contribute to a low-carbon economy.

These innovations and more are waiting for Chinaplas attendees at the NatureWorks exhibit in Hall 7.2/Stand J25. Also, be sure to attend the NatureWorks Tech Talks on May 22 at 10:50am-11:10am in hall 4.2 / booth T51 to hear about new innovative biomaterials for industrial 3D printing applications and May 23 at 10:50am-11:10am in hall 4.2 / booth T51 where we will go in-depth into the technology behind and opportunity for biomatierals in new applications.
