Why Composting Infrastructure Matters
Composting Consortium issues calls to action for investors, policymakers, consumers, and the composting industry for the future of food waste composting. Less than 4% of the 66 million tons of total food waste generated by the US annually is diverted to a compost site. The composting industry in the United States presents a powerful solution for diverting food waste from landfills, creating valuable nutrient-rich compost, and promoting a circular economy. The composting industry is on the cusp of major growth, but investment and collaboration are needed to handle complex food waste streams like post-consumer food scraps and compostable packaging. BPI: Beyond Plastics Report Mischaracterizes Compostable Products
A new report from Beyond Plastics, "Demystifying Compostable and Biodegradable Plastics," casts compostable bioplastics as “not ready for primetime”, contained contradictory claims, misrepresented third party certifications, and failed to contact key representatives from the largest organizations in the movement.
In a press release by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), Executive Director of BPI, Rhodes Yepsen said, “This report should be disconcerting to the public and to the funders and allies of Beyond Plastics. It appears no effort was made to contact BPI, its Board Members, or the US Composting Council (USCC). If Beyond Plastics had conducted due diligence by contacting BPI, it would have discovered a highly collaborative and transparent organization dedicated to driving positive change for society and the environment.” Read the Press Release
