The Science of Safety & Non-Toxicity Behind Ingeo™ PLA

Plastics are typically created by linking simple molecules into long chains. At NatureWorks, we take a more sustainable approach, harnessing plants to capture and convert CO₂ into sugar molecules. Through fermentation, these sugars become lactic acid—the building block for our Ingeo™ PLA biomaterials, a compound naturally found in foods like yogurt and even in our muscles after exercise.
One unique feature of Ingeo PLA is the ability to control its physical properties by blending “left-hand” and “right-hand” versions of lactic acid. This innovation allows us to adjust the material’s performance without using harmful additives like plasticizers, BPA, or phthalates, setting Ingeo apart from many traditional plastics. This versatility enables Ingeo to replace various plastics, such as polyester in t-shirts, polystyrene in yogurt cups, polypropylene in wipes, and polycarbonate in durable goods.
We understand growing concerns around the toxicology and environmental impact of plastics. To address these, NatureWorks employs rigorous testing and certification processes to ensure Ingeo’s safety and compliance. Our materials undergo third-party evaluations, including the GreenScreen Platinum Certification from trusted organizations like the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) and Clean Production Action (CPA).
Ingeo is fully compliant with U.S. and EU food packaging regulations. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have reviewed and approved lactic acid, the core of Ingeo, for direct use in food at safe levels.
Beyond product development, we maintain strict oversight along the value chain to ensure Ingeo is used safely and responsibly:
- Chain of custody monitoring: We track how our biomaterials move through the supply chain.
- Substance compliance agreements: Customers and licensees must adhere to strict policies regarding material usage.
- Random sampling: We verify Ingeo’s proper use through random checks.
- Third-party certification: Organizations like Clean Production Action certify our biomaterials for safety.
At NatureWorks, innovation and responsibility go hand in hand. While we continue to push boundaries in sustainable materials, we prioritize safety through education, collaboration, and rigorous testing—ensuring that Ingeo PLA benefits both businesses and the planet.
